What does the Dzika Lekcja Foundation do?

The Dzika Lekcja Foundation runs a Wild Animal Rehabilitation Center where we treat, care for, and prepare hedgehogs and other small wild animals for return to the wild. We provide on-site and home care, convalescence spaces, and cooperate with volunteers and veterinary centers.

Is Dzika Lekcja a sanctuary or a rehabilitation center?

It is primarily a rehabilitation center. Hedgehogs are treated and prepared for return to the wild. We do not serve as a permanent sanctuary for animals; most of our charges are released back into the wild after recovery.

How many animals do you rescue annually and what facilities do you have?

About 50 animals arrive at the center each year. The center has, among other things, 5 outdoor enclosures, 2 aviaries, and a system of round-the-clock home care for individuals requiring special attention. Work is also planned on a small clinic that will allow us to help a larger number of patients.

How can I make a financial donation?

You can make a one-time transfer or a standing order to the account: Fundacja Dzika Lekcja, transfer title 'donation for statutory purposes – hedgehogs', account number 59 1600 1462 1745 7489 0000 0001. Alternatively support us through Buy Coffee: https://buycoffee.to/dzikalekcja. Donations to public benefit purposes may be tax-deductible — consult this with your advisor.

What items do you most often need and what can I donate?

Current needs include: high-meat wet food for carnivores (grain-free), absorbent/hygienic pads, syringes 1–5 ml, saline solution, newsprint (grey newspapers) and corrugated cardboard in rolls. Towels, blankets and cleaning supplies are also useful. Before donating items, it is worth contacting the foundation to confirm current needs.

In what other ways can I help besides donations?

You can become a volunteer supporting transports, share information about our activities, take part in clean-up actions, or support us through sponsorship or regular financial support. We also invite you to educational workshops — these help and promote hedgehog conservation.

How do I report a found hedgehog?

Fill out the hedgehog report form available on the foundation's website, providing consent for data processing, the location (GPS or address), information on whether you can deliver the hedgehog, and preferences regarding volunteer transport. Provide a phone number for quick contact and details of the place where it was found. After sending the report we will contact you as soon as possible.

What should I do immediately after finding a hedgehog?

Gently place the hedgehog in a cardboard box with holes, line it with a soft towel or cloth, provide warmth (e.g. a hot water bottle next to the box, not directly on the hedgehog) and put it in a quiet, dark place. Do not give milk — it is toxic to hedgehogs. If the hedgehog appears injured, emaciated, or is visible during the day, contact the foundation or a rehabilitation center.

Can I bring a hedgehog to the center without prior notice?

It is best to call ahead. A phone notification allows us to prepare space and care. In the report form you can indicate that you will deliver the hedgehog yourself, which will facilitate coordination of admission.

Does the foundation organize transport for found hedgehogs?

Yes — the foundation attempts to organize volunteer transport depending on the availability of volunteers in the area. In the report form you can request transport and specify an approximate pickup time window. Transport is not guaranteed and depends on volunteer availability.

What information should I provide to facilitate organizing transport?

In the form provide the exact location (GPS or address), pickup address if different from the place where it was found, preferred time window (e.g. 'as soon as possible', 'within 1 hour', 'still today'), a contact phone number, and additional notes for the volunteer (e.g. whether there are dogs on the property, whether the hedgehog is in a box).

How can I become a transport volunteer?

Contact the foundation by phone or email and express your willingness to help. The foundation collects volunteer data and organizes pickups as needed. Volunteering may include transporting hedgehogs to the center or support during rescue actions.

What educational and social projects does the Foundation run?

Current projects include 'Active Seniors ASY' (free classes for seniors), 'Friendly Youth Club' (free classes for youth), and 'Eco-Survival' (a series of educational field trips, recruitment is ongoing). The foundation has also carried out completed projects, e.g. 'Safe and Active Senior' and 'Youth Club in Głogów'. Details are on the projects page.

What are Dzika Lekcja's workshops about and how do I sign up?

The workshops cover knowledge about hedgehogs, their protection and practical ways to help wild animals. They include presentations, exercises and a question-and-answer session. To sign up, leave your details via the form on the workshops offer page or contact the foundation directly to arrange the date and program details.

Who can participate in the clubs and projects?

Projects vary: some are aimed at seniors (60+), others at youth or students from specific areas. Most activities are free. Detailed participation conditions and criteria (e.g. student status) are provided in the description of each project on the website.

Where can I watch the foundation's educational videos?

Educational videos are available on the foundation's YouTube channel. Worth watching, among others: 'What to do with a secured hedgehog?', 'What not to do with a found hedgehog?', 'How to secure a found hedgehog?' and a webinar on hedgehog evacuation. Links to the videos are posted in the Educational Videos section on the foundation's website.

How to recognize a sick or injured hedgehog?

Signs requiring intervention include: being visible during the day (hedgehogs are nocturnal), apathy, failing to flee when approached, wounds, lack of appetite, emaciation, visible parasites, or difficulty moving. Detailed advice is available in the article 'JEŻowe SOS' on the Foundation's website.

Can hedgehogs be fed and what should be given to them?

In spring and summer most hedgehogs cope on their own. In autumn it is worth helping by placing a bowl of water and a little high-meat, grain-free wet cat food. Never give milk or dairy products — hedgehogs cannot digest lactose and it can be fatal for them.

How can I contact the Dzika Lekcja Foundation?

Contact details: address Kruszyny 86, 87-326, email dzikalekcja@gmail.com, phone +48 667 730 721. The foundation is also present on social media: Facebook and YouTube. In case of urgent assistance it is best to call by phone.

Can I visit the center and see the hedgehogs?

On a day-to-day basis the center does not accept private visits because the residents need peace. However, we organize workshops and educational meetings during which you can learn about the foundation's activities. Please contact us in advance to arrange a visit.

Where is the hedgehog report form located?

The hedgehog report form is located on the foundation's website in the Contact/Report section. The form guides you step by step through consent for data processing, location, transport options, details of the finding and contact information.
